The Opportunity

Be at the commercial heart of our rapidly expanding Electrical & Security Division. You'll produce accurate, competitive estimates that win projects and drive growth across integrated security and electrical installations throughout the UK.

Work directly with specialist sales personnel and contract managers in a focused, collaborative environment where thoughtful communication and strategic thinking deliver exceptional results.

What You'll Do

• Produce accurate estimates for integrated security systems, electrical works, and fire protection projects
• Review architectural drawings, specifications, and technical documentation to calculate materials, labour, and timelines
• Conduct site surveys, take off quantities, and liaise with suppliers to ensure competitive pricing
• Support tender submissions and respond to complex enquiries across multiple disciplines
• Maintain estimating databases and ensure compliance with industry standards (SSAIB, NSI, Building Regulations Part B)
• Collaborate with project managers, security consultants, engineers, and installation teams
• Identify project risks, highlight technical requirements, and support pricing strategy development

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Proven estimating experience in the security industry
• Excellent numerical skills and attention to detail
• Proficient with estimating software and MS Office Suite (particularly Excel)
• Ability to read technical drawings and specifications
• Strong communication and analytical thinking skills
• Drive to succeed in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Highly Desirable:

• Experience with security systems: access control, door entry, CCTV, intruder alarms, integrated platforms & warden call

What You’ll Be Doing

• Prepare accurate, timely, and competitive estimates for passive fire protection projects across the UK, including fire stopping systems, fire-resistant partitions, intumescent coatings, fire doors, and cavity barriers
• Analyse architectural drawings, specifications, and tender documentation to determine material, labour, and equipment requirements
• Develop and submit tender proposals in collaboration with the commercial and project teams
• Conduct site surveys and take-offs from drawings as required
• Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain and verify competitive pricing
• Maintain and update estimating databases, price lists, and cost libraries
• Ensure all estimates comply with Building Regulations Part B, British Standards, and fire safety compliance requirements
• Support bid strategy development by identifying risks, clarifying technical queries, and ensuring accuracy in submissions
• Work closely with project managers and fire engineers to ensure estimates are both achievable and commercially sound

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience in estimating or bid preparation within passive fire protection, fire stopping, or construction
• Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
• Excellent numerical, analytical, and organisational skills
• Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Excel
• Familiarity with construction estimating tools, CRM systems, and document management platforms (e.g. Procore, Bluebeam, or Causeway) is advantageous

What You’ll Be Doing

Based at our Plymouth head office, this is a fully office-based role where you’ll take commercial ownership of a portfolio of projects. Day to day, you’ll be responsible for:

Commercial Ownership

• Driving cost control and gross profit improvement across your project portfolio
• Leading subcontractor sourcing, negotiation, and procurement to protect and improve margins.
• Creating Bills of Materials and negotiating uplifts and extras.
• Managing cash flow and debtor control, ensuring billing is completed in line with contract dates.
• Issuing invoices promptly post month-end to minimise accrued income.
• Creating and sending accurate monthly valuations to clients.
• Reviewing forecasts to ensure all reported figures are robust and reliable.

Team Leadership

• Managing, mentoring, and developing your team of QSs and a Commercial Administrator.
• Handling HR matters including annual leave, one-to-ones, performance feedback, and disciplinary issues.
• Resolving escalated issues within your team before they reach the Associate Divisional Director.

Cross-Department Collaboration

• Working closely with project management, operations, and finance to align commercial performance with project delivery.
• Reporting and escalating commercial impacts per the reporting matrix: within 2.5% stays in the Business Unit; above 2.5% is flagged to the Commercial Manager and Business Unit Director.
• Maintaining a broad awareness of business activity across all departments to inform your commercial decisions.

The Role

We're part of an exciting group of companies specialising in fire safety services and building compliance. Right now, we're looking for a skilled Fire Door and Compartmentation Surveyor to join our team working exclusively on Ministry of Defence (MOD) projects.

Security Clearance Required

This role involves working on high-security MOD sites and facilities. Successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance, which will be fully funded by the company. The clearance process will be initiated upon offer of employment.

The role

You'll be working with the Ministry of Defence across various military and defence establishments to ensure their buildings meet fire safety regulations and MOD-specific requirements. It's varied work that combines technical expertise with client interaction in high-security environments.

Day-to-day responsibilities: You'll be surveying MOD buildings and facilities to assess compartmentation and passive fire protection, carrying out door inspections (some requiring FDIS certification) and identifying compartmentation line errors. Working with building drawings (including classified documentation) to understand fire ratings, you'll sometimes conduct destructive surveys to uncover hidden issues, then create detailed lists of defects and develop practical solutions. Beyond the technical surveying work, you'll review quotations from your findings, work closely with Health Check Managers and the Operations team, and meet with MOD clients and personnel to explain survey results and the importance of addressing identified issues. You'll also provide ongoing technical support on MOD properties and help Project Managers with your building knowledge and expertise, all while maintaining strict security protocols.

What we need from you

Essential:

• Good understanding of fire safety regulations
• Previous compartmentation and/or door surveying experience
• Ability to read construction drawings (including working with sensitive/classified documents)
• Strong communication skills and ability to work within secure environments
• Comfortable with IT (Microsoft Office, tablet software)
• Full driving licence
• Eye for detail and practical problem-solving approach
• Ability to obtain and maintain UK security clearance (fully funded by the company)
• Willingness to commit to a minimum 3-year contract
• Understanding of and ability to comply with MOD security protocols

Ideal:

• FDIS certification would be great
• Previous experience working on government or MOD projects
• Existing security clearance (BPSS level)
