About Basildon University Hospital

Basildon University Hospital is an acute general hospital in Basildon, serving a significant population. As part of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, it is dedicated to providing high-quality patient care and maintaining safe, functional environments for its staff and visitors. The project involved the full refurbishment of theatres 6 & 7 within their theatre building.

The Challenge

Basildon University Hospital required a high-quality fire door installation as part of a full refurbishment of theatres 6 & 7. Working within an active hospital environment presented unique and significant logistical challenges. On several occasions, the Ventro team arrived on-site but was unable to commence work due to theatres being in use for emergency procedures. This unpredictable nature of hospital operations demanded an exceptionally high degree of flexibility and coordination with hospital staff to ensure that essential fire safety works could be completed without affecting critical patient care.

The Solution

Understanding the unpredictable nature of hospital operations, Ventro adopted a highly adaptable and collaborative approach. The team strategically scheduled works for weekends, including Saturdays, to align with lower theatre usage. This proactive planning effectively minimised disruption to vital hospital services while ensuring that critical fire safety upgrades could be delivered within the hospital’s stringent refurbishment timeline.

Basildon NHS 5Close collaboration was key: Ventro worked in tandem with SDS (the advanced fire door supplier) and the hospital facilities team to ensure clear communication and rapid response to any scheduling adjustments. For the installation, Ventro utilized SDS’s advanced fire doors, specifically designed for high-risk healthcare settings, providing superior fire protection, durability, and hygiene control.

Additionally, DSI Automation supplied and installed specialist door closers, ensuring smooth, hands-free operation in compliance with hospital safety and accessibility requirements. Ventro also provided a one-stop solution for the client, efficiently project managing between all parties, including door suppliers, closure specialists, and electricians, while prioritizing the job to ensure its completion within the hospital’s refurbishment timeframes.
